In The Eye of the Beholder

People often say that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.
   -Salma Hayek

I'm reminded of a photographer, Sally Mann, when I took this shot. She's a photographer that took what many people consider controversial photographs of her children. And I'll admit, I was uncomfortable with some of them, however in the larger scheme of it all, she made photographs of what came natural to her.  Annie Leboweitz also made a photograph of her breastfeeding one of her children, although, I think for her it meant something totally different than the reason I took this photograph. One of my sisters will kill me if she was to see this photograph. She thinks its the grossest thing, breastfeeding. She thinks there's no medical reason to do it if there is formula and she feels she has bonded the same way as one who breastfeeds. She has six children and they are all wonderful, healthy kids so I cannot argue with her but I do believe that the bond and closeness you create when nursing is totally different. I think she may accuse me of exposing myself, but this photograph was taken in my house, my bedroom, with my camera, by myself and I don't mind nursing in front of anyone. While in public I do place a blanket over myself, I don't do it because I am ashamed, I do it because other people may be uncomfortable. I started off this post with a quote from Salma Hayak. She's a Mexican actress and she got a lot of heat from the media for a photograph taken of her breastfeeding an orphaned black baby in Africa. I thought that was one of the most beautiful photographs of her (and believe me some may argue she has way better looking photographs) but I loved it because she was doing what should come natural to any human being, she was helping.  Let me tell you I would have done the same. I'm sorry to whoever out there may find this photograph offensive or gross, or that I'm exposing myself, I promise that is not my intention.  At the end like Salma Hayak said it's all in the eye of the beholder.

My Alice in Wonderland

I think most people are aware that I have a fascination with Alice in Wonderland. I think it's just the sort of out there imagination of this little girl that speaks to a lot of girls. Sophia reminds my of how Alice would look as she's imagining this make believe world full of wonder...Sophia was so excited being my model today. She said she wanted to be in a mazagine...(yes, I'm aware it's not spelled correctly but that's the way she pronounces it).

The Paper Flowers

This whole day I carried my camera with me everywhere I went. I always think that the photograph I want to take it going to be this like incredible thing that is going to bolt in my face screaming "Take my picture, take my picture" but I didn't get that big kaboom. Instead just as I was giving up on having a unique photograph today, I looked at my very own dining room table and spotted the very photograph waiting to be taken. My paper flowers...

I made these flowers from a book my old boss made me read once. It was actually a good book but I'm trying to reuse, recycle and re-purpose, so instead of getting .50 for it at Half Price books, I decided to make something with it. With the help of my Cricut, I made these beautiful flowers. And I'll have you know that I took them to my sisters Christmas party for a gift exchange game she plays and they were not appreciated. So I won them back and brought them home. I guess not all people appreciate the work of someone's hands. But in the end, I've received a lot of compliments for my paper flowers sitting right on my table. Where they should be.

Making Photos Have A Story...or Photos Of Books With Stories

So there's a growing stack of books that I have intentions of reading...I used to be able to read a new book every week, but with a new baby, your priorities change a bit. A lot of the books I read are "chick" books, not to be confused by "romance" novels. I want to start reading biographies. I once heard this speaker say that reading biographies gives you perspective. I believe that. Hopefully next time I take a photograph of the books I want to read there is less books and more biographies.
On a side note: I love tea......

and this is why cats get a bad rap...

So I still feel terribly sick, but the weather is beautiful and I'm determined to make a photograph everyday. I tell Sophia that I want to photograph her shoes. So I get down all the way to the ground, feeling all the drainage stomped up in my sinus slowing making its descend and I really just want to take a couple of shots then call it a day and what does my cat, Mylo, decide to do...well he wants in on the action too! Of course I'm hacking a lung here and Sophia is trying to maintain her pose and he DOESN'T GET OUT OF THE WAY! Needless to say, it took some heavy threatening and at that he leisurely strolled out of the frame...I did get a better image of her shoes but I really felt this one had a bigger story. Make your photographs have a story. Oh and continue praying for me, every time I cough I feel like my head is going to E X P L O D E....not a fun feeling......................

Sick...

So I am admitting I'm sick...I really didn't want to start the year off like that but I'm praying I get better soon. Maybe it was all the strenuous gardening work, ha! Anyway, one of my resolutions was to take a picture everyday so here goes

I wish I could say something more about why I shot these photographs but I am pretty sure the medicine has
    kicked
             in
                because
                       I'm
                            really
                                  really
                                       drowsssssssssssyyyyy

2011...I mean 2012 Resolutions

So I thought of my new years resolutions yesterday...I also looked back to last years...I actually accomplished a lot of last years resolutions so I'm really hoping to check off the ones for this year. Funny how gardening was last years resolution but I started it today. I didn't mean to really. I woke up, did my bible devotion and had a daily cup of joe.

My hubby had already started doing lawn work and as I walked back I was greeted with this patch of a mess. The owner before us had a beautiful garden there once and I've just let it be over taken with weeds and grass. So with out a moments delay I dug in
 (literally)

Even got the kids in on the fun...

Meet some new friends...

and after all our hard work I got myself a clean bed to start my new garden...

Tune in tomorrow to see what I'm going to plant...
